Gatlinburg has quite the history! Much like most popular vacation destinations, there are some weird things to be revealed about our town in the Smokies. It’s true, Gatlinburg has become a popular vacation destination for many people. From the amazing restaurants to fun attractions, it’s no wonder people want to come here. But, most people don’t know some of the funny and weird facts about Gatlinburg so we thought we’d share some with you!

1. Gatlinburg only has about 4,000 permanent residents

Although millions of tourists come to Gatlinburg each year, the area only has about 4,000 permanent residents. The town is a popular tourist destination so it makes sense that the tourist numbers would outweigh the residents. However, Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies reports having 10,000 sea creatures living there which is more than the residents of Gatlinburg. I guess we are just outnumbered!

2. The first log cabin in Gatlinburg was built in 1802

More than 200 years is pretty old, especially for a log cabin. The first log cabin in Gatlinburg was built in 1802 by William Ogle. Today, it isn’t in its original location. It has been relocated twice – once to the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, and then finally to its current location at the Gatlinburg Welcome Center. Ogle built the cabin for his family and they eventually moved there, but only after Ogle’s death.

3. The oldest pancake house in Tennessee is in Gatlinburg

If you’re ever been to Gatlinburg, then you know how much we love our pancakes. So much so, that the oldest pancake house in Tennessee is located in Gatlinburg. The Pancake Pantry was established by Jim and June Gerding in the ’60s. Today, the pancake house is still serving up pancakes with delicious apple cider syrup to guests from all over.

4. People love tying the knot here!

That’s right! Gatlinburg is the 2nd most popular wedding destination in the U.S. Following behind Las Vegas, there seems to be something romantic about our town! We think the wedding appeal comes from the gorgeous mountain views and elegant chapels. The many pancake houses probably don’t hurt either!
